The newly discovered Nazca Line is humanoid shaped.
It has a rectangular head and appears to be wearing a headdress and carrying a stick.
Sometimes artificial intelligence is helpful. In this new case, it allowed these archeologists to discover a new and strange humanoid-shaped geoglyph in the Peruvian desert.
The humanoid is approximately 13.1 feet (4 meters) long and 6.6 feet (2 meters) wide, has a rectangular head and is holding a stick.
The newly discovered Nazca Line is one of hundreds of diverse shapes carved into an estimated 170 square miles (450 square kilometers) of Peru and which have been etched in the desert between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500.
However, the purpose of these various shapes, including plants, animals, humans and geometric shapes remains unknown.
Artificial Intelligence for Archeology
The newest Nazca Line has been found by using an artificial intelligence powered by IBM’s Watson Machine Learning Accelerator.
After showing a massive amount of geoglyphs pictures to the artificial intelligence to learn what the nazca lines look like, the AI went through a massive amount of aerial, satellite images and laser data (Lidar) to find never-before-reported lines in the desert ground.
What an impressive archeological find!
Instead of using artificial intelligence to spy on us, better use it to decipher ancient artifacts like this humanoid-shaped character etched into the Peruvian desert or other lost cities around the world. [LiveScience]
