The Black Sea water around Aleksino Beach, Novorossiysk, Russia turned red on January 28, 2020.
The water stained clothing, skin and had a very unpleasant odor. Meanwhile the cause of the color remains unexplained.

Two videos, one shot on January 28 and the other a day later, show the strange phenomenon.
According to eye witnesses the red water was accompanied by a putrid smell ressembling that of phenol and dye.
It is still impossible to clearly establish the causes of the change in color. However, such a red color is sometimes associated with algae blooming in warm water.
So the cause may be natural or it may also be pollution. We will better know in a few weeks after precise analyses of the collected water samples.
