OpenAI drops ban on military tools to partner with the Pentagon

OpenAI is working with the Pentagon on software projects, including ones related to cybersecurity, the company said Tuesday, in a dramatic change from its previous ban on providing its artificial intelligence technology to militaries.

The ChatGPT creator is also in discussions with the U.S. government about developing tools to reduce veteran suicides, Anna Makanju, the company’s vice president of global affairs, said at the World Economic Forum — but added that it will retain its ban on developing weapons.

Last week, OpenAI removed language in its usage policy that would ban its AI from being used in “military and warfare” applications, sparking alarm among AI safety advocates.

Silicon Valley has changed its mind about collaborating with the Pentagon

Silicon Valley has softened its stance on collaborating with the U.S. military in recent years. In 2018, thousands of Google employees protested a Pentagon project, fearing technology they developed could be used for lethal purposes.

That proved to be the high water mark of Silicon Valley opposition to the Department of Defense, with Google since earning hundreds of millions from its defense contracts.

The Pentagon has made a concerted effort in recent years to win over Silicon Valley startups in order to develop new weapons technology and integrate advanced tools into the department’s operations. U.S.-China tensions and Russia’s war in Ukraine have also served to dispel many of the qualms entrepreneurs once had about military collaboration.

“What’s emerged lately is a kind of techno-patriotism in Silicon Valley,” wrote Semafor’s technology editor Reed Albergotti.

AI may remake the military, but could come with profound risks

Defense experts have been bullish about the impact AI will have on the military. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, now a prominent defense industry figure, has compared the arrival of AI to the advent of nuclear weapons, Wired reported.

“Einstein wrote a letter to Roosevelt in the 1930s saying that there is this new technology — nuclear weapons — that could change war, which it clearly did. I would argue that [AI-powered] autonomy and decentralized, distributed systems are that powerful,” Schmidt said.

But advocacy groups have warned that integrating AI into warfare could come with profound risks given AI’s tendency to “hallucinate” — make up fake information and pass it off as real — which could have far higher stakes if AI-powered systems are integrated into command and control systems.

The Arms Control Association has warned that the rush to “exploit emerging technologies for military use has accelerated at a much faster pace than efforts to assess the dangers they pose.”

OpenAI rules are unclear about scope of possible military deals

Although OpenAI has ruled out developing weapons, its new policy would likely allow it to provide AI software to the Department of Defense for uses such as helping analysts interpret data or write code, The Information reported.

But as the war in Ukraine has shown, the divide between data crunching and warfare may not be as clear-cut as OpenAI would like. Ukraine has developed and imported software to analyze large data, which has allowed its artillery operators to be rapidly notified of Russian targets in the area and dramatically speed up the pace at which they can fire.

Meanwhile, The Information warned that the change in policy could be enough to reignite the debate over AI safety at OpenAI that contributed to Sam Altman’s brief firing as CEO.

  1. No that would be the cradle to prison complex created in 1974.This was the beginning of removing children from their their parents. The laws were changed to mean that children were automatically in the custody of the state rather than their parents.Only allowed to raise them if some state God decides its Ok.Allowing and encouraging every terrorist stalker rapist thief and crazy person to phone in abuse allegations. All while remaining anonymous.Worse yet all paid for by the state. No recourse No defense.
Let’s not even get into if the parents God Forbid discipline their kids. The state God’s will be there for the crucifixion persecution of said parent.
Wanna change the trajectory remove the pipeline and it’s crimes.Either change the damn laws allowing parents to be parents or continue the same road with its obvious consequences.Well there is a third way mass sterilization of those between 12 and 65 (menopause and those already sterile would be exempt in women)For men Age 12 and up.The only
only way out is if they are naturally sterile.
or have already had a vasectomy.
This ends one way or the other.

  2. Contributing anything to this out-of-control empire will result in the worst possible outcomes. They will continue to invade, rape and pillage but now they will do it at a velocity previously unknown.

I simply can’t believe that Americans are this GD dumb.

  3. Angie, it cannot be one entity alone at play. As Yahweh/God has Elohim (angels who work for him), Lucifer also has non-human entities who guide the world elite. Heard it from a Frenchman’s English report (who leaked this fact from U.S. military intelligence). Same Frenchman also said Florida will entirely be underwater by 2026, according to U.S. military intelligence. The safest areas of America to escape to, might be the Midwest or near the Appalachian mountains/prairies. Probably where most of the world elites’ bunkers are located (looking like ‘burial mounds/hills’).

  4. I know people live an illusion and believe otherwise, but A I. is by far the biggest hoax or lie perpetuated on anyone to date. All A.I. is programmed to respond. It cannot “think,” variables are given but the path is pre-chosen for it. A I. is in essence, the devil replying to humanity in response to wonderment and the idea of unknown or perceived stalemate thought. Sooner or later we need to ask ourselves why we asked the machine how it feels today.

  5. Don’t be surprised when A.I. androids become the new soldiers, employees, and farmers. 98% of U.S. youth (Gen Z) cannot be enrolled into the U.S. military, only 2% can? Is it due to ‘laziness/bad parenting’, or due to what Anne Dachel reports about almost daily (‘neurodiversity’ and violent rages/violent outbursts, now also affecting ‘neurotypical’ adults and teens with AND without ASDs as well?) Teachers everywhere, every state, want to quit the teaching profession entirely, as Gen A and Gen Z are the most ‘neurodivergent’ and disruptive student bodies in history.

https://annedachel.substack.com/p/wake-co-nc-today-its-restraint-and?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2 (“WAKE CO N.C.: Today it’s restraint and seclusion. What will the future be like?”)

Nutshell answer to Dachel’s question: the future will be the same, on steroids. Violent ASD outbursts are THE reason 40k/40,000 Florida cops are becoming ‘neurodiversity’ N.W.O. foot-soldiers for the Baker Act school-to-psych.ward (S.T.P.W.) pipeline. The ‘freedom state’ my intestines after a diarrhea episode.
