Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano unleashed a powerful explosion on February 14, 2019. It was the first eruption of a long series of explosions that started about 9pm local time and went on for more than three hours. Today, 11 explosions have been reported sending plumes of ash and gas more than 2km in the air.

33 exhalations accompanied by water vapor and gas as well as 11 explosions – most important at 04:38, 04:57, 07:19, 08:21 and 09:56 – have been reported within the last 24 hours.

At around 4:00 p.m., an episode of harmonic tremor started, ejecting water vapor and other gases up to 1.5km in the air. At about 6:30 p.m., incandescent fragments were ejected with a ash plume more than 2km in the air… until 10 p.m..

The volcanic alert level remains at Yellow Phase 2. The CENAPRED urges NOT TO APPROACH the volcano and especially the crater, because of the danger that involves the fall of ballistic fragments. In case of heavy flow, it is preferable to get away from ravines because of the risk of landslides and mud flows.
