Warning issued amid seismic activity from Mt. Lokon

Amid increased volcanic activity at Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, officials have raised the alert level for the volcano to waspada (Level II). Consequently, residents and visitors aren’t allowed from coming within a 1.5-kilometer radius from the crater.

The Lokon-Empung flank vent of the VEI-8 volcano Tondano is nearing an eruption as evidenced by geophysical data. A 1.5 kilometre exclusion zone has been set around the volcanic edifice.

The tremors from Mt. Lokon suggest that gas and magma are migrating, which means pressure has been accumulating. This intense seismic activity could be followed by an eruption.

Alert up as Mayon shows ‘abnormal behavior’

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the alert level of Mayon Volcano to Alert Level 1, after 25 volcanic earthquakes – 91 over the past 2 days – and a higher-than-normal sulfur-dioxide (SO2) emission were recorded on Monday.
