Landslide at Great Smoky Mountains National Park destructs road – January 16 2013

0

As a result of heavy rain, a landslide occurred about nine miles from Cherokee, NC on January 16, 2013 and caused the closure of U.S. 441 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As you can see in the movie below, re-opening the road totally will take months. This landslide was one of dozen in the region, but the most significant. The road connects Cherokee with Gatlinburg, Tenn., and business owners in Cherokee are concerned about an extended closure of the road. The highway carries an estimated 2.2 million visitors annually. Well hopefully, this is going to go fast! – Citizen Times
