Scientists were not sure if the island would remain.
Now Nishinoshima is 12 times bigger than when it suddenly appeared from underwater.
This new island first reached the surface of the water in November 2013, just next to island Nishinoshima, which it eventually grew to engulf.
The new islet Nishinoshima is about 1.2 miles roughly square and up to 328 feet tall.
