A mysterious object believed to be a meteorite killed one and injured two as it fell on a college campus in India on February 6, 2016.
A loud blast was heard just after midnight during the still unexplained event that happened near Natrampalli in Vellore district in northern Tamil Nadu.
A crater formed at the site of blast. The impact also destroyed windows of vehicules parked in the proximity of an exploded water tank.
A college employee suffered serious injuries and was declared dead when taken to the Vaniyambadi Government Hospital. Three others suffered minor injuries.
Preliminary investigations show there is no sign of a bomb explosion. But pieces of a rare kind of stone were found and samples taken for analysis by scientists.
Neither terror nor sabotage… Then meteorite?
Officials suspect this explosion has been triggered by a meteorite fall. A similar blast occurred in the same district on January 26, 2016. As explained to The Hindu: “We are convinced that it is a meteorite that fell with high velocity. In the earlier incident, local people remember having seen an object falling from the sky in the field.”
Of course some cameras could clarify the mysterious sky event rapidly. Do you have any clues?
