Every spring, the water snakes of Florida look for love around the state’s countless freshwater coasts.
That’s right: It’s snake orgy season.
It appears that the snakes have started congregating for mating.
Last week, visitors to Lake Hollingsworth were shocked to see piles of mating reptiles on the shores.
There were so many that the local parks and recreation department had to close parts of the lake and warn people on Facebook.
But don’t be alarmed, those snakes (banded water snake and the brown water snake are harmless and venom-free and live in wetlands around Florida and Alabama and as far north as Virginia.
They love basking on the beaches or dangling over the water and normally eat fish, frogs and other tiny wetland creatures.
Brown water snakes are known to birth 60 babies at a time. Each one measures between 7 and 11 inches (18 and 28 centimeters) long. So as you can understand, the population is growing fast.
This mating snake gathering in Florida is very similar to the world’s largest Narcisse Snake Dens meeting in Manitoba, Canada. Meanwhile, please do not disturb the snake orgy. 😉
