Crete has been hit by a major M6.6 earthquake on May 2, 2020.
The huge tremor hit this afternoon at around 2pm without triggering any tsunami warnings or threats. The level of damage or injuries on the island, one of Greece’s biggest is still unknown.
According to a Twitter source, there is no tsunami threat for the island of Crete:
The earthquake was recorded at a depth of between 17km (10.1 miles) below ground level in the Mediterranean Sea.
Estimates suggest the quake was centered around 90km south of the Greek island, which is a popular holiday destination.
Twitter reports suggest the quake was felt as far away as Albania, with some claiming to have felt it in the Middle East. [USGS]
