The protected and almost perfectly round-shaped ‘lake Babe’ in the Voronezh region, Russia has suddenly disappeared, like evaporated.
The natural monument is 157 hectares large (388 acres) and is located near the confluence of the Tokay and Elan rivers (4.3 km north-west), in the floodplain of the Tokay river.
The mysterious and rapid draining of the lake situated in the Anninsky district was reported by baffled and worried residents on August 8, 2021.
According to villagers, the lake has never dried up before. It is unknown if the unique lake will ever fill up again.
Unique natural monument lake
Lake Babe is a natural monument of the Voronezh region, and thus a protected area.
The lake is almost perfectly round. It is 700 meters long (2297 feet) and 625 meters wide (2051 feet). The depth of the reservoir ranges between 1 and 5 meters (3.3 – 16.4 feet).
This structure indicates the formation of a lake in a crater of non-volcanic origin, possibly from a meteorite fall.
Within a few days, beginning of August 2021, moisture deficit and sweltering heat destroyed this unique lake. The water has completely disappeared, evaporated.
Meanwhile, officials are investigating the mysterious disappearance of the water. Is it only due to high temperatures or did cracks and fissures also opened up at the bottom of the unique lake?
Back in 2020, Lake Chistoe also lost all its water underground for the first time in more than 45 years. But in this case, the lake will fill up again when underground aquifers overflow with water. [VestivRN, Online Anna]
Meanwhile, a small pond turned blood red in the same region, a few days ago…
And with the continuous drought and high temperatures, we may see always more lakes disappear from the map.
