Eruption of volcano Tungurahua, Ecuador, 19.08.2012

Here a live recording of the eruption of Tungurahua, a volcano situated in the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador.

Although the movie was done at a certain distance of the volcano, the sounds of the explosions are loud and frightening.

“Tungurahua” means “Throat of Fire”. This volcano is classified as a stratovolcano and eruptions are of strombolian nature, meaning they are accompanied by strong explosions, pyroclastic and sometimes lava flows.

Tungurahua’s major eruptions occured on 16 August 2006, 6 February 2008, 28 May 2010, 4 December 2010 and 26 April 2011 during which inhabitants were temporarly evacuated. Is this the next big one?
