Christine Wright reported on the Strange Sounds FaceBook community page:

[quote_box_center]Someone noted in private comment to me that this morning, after hearing those weird noises all day yesterday, that a 3.47 magnitude earthquake happened near Covington, Tennessee this morning. How many people hear and record these sounds right before an earthquake.. anyone know?[/quote_box_center]

Earthquake sometimes go boom when the Earth releases pressure. Here some other reports of booms for the same quake:

RIpley, TN – It was a single, very strong “THUMP!” Very bassy tone, with no afters. No treble or midrange audio, only bass. Ripley courthouse was evacuated due to shaking.

Covington Tennessee – boom, one shake. thumping.

Osceola AR – Barefooted and sitting still @ 8.26 local. Felt the ground move and door that was slighly ajar rattled for couple of seconds

Henning – Very loud boom and then lots of rattling and shaking. Felt like a good 10 seconds before it ended.

Ripley – I felt a light shaking that lasted approximately 10 to 15 seconds. The courthouse was evacuated as a precautionary measure. There was no immediate physical damage.

Covington, TN – Did not feel it but heard it in the 8:30ish timeframe this morning. Heard loud rumble, very bass, which lasted about 10-15 seconds. I listened for rattling of structure or contents but none came so I discounted thought that it could be an earthquake. Now I find that there was 3.5 around that same time. We have a full 10 1/2′ deep basement and I was on main floor lying on bed so that may be why I didn’t feel or hear rattles or shaking.

Ripley – 10-15 seconds of shaking with large. boom. pictures. turned hanging on the wall.

Ripley – Heard a blunder. Then a little shaking and rattling

And as the USGS notes:

[quote_box_center]The New Madrid seismic zone of southeast Missouri and adjacent States is the most seismically active in North America east of the Rockies. During the winter of 1811-1812 three very large earthquakes devastated the area and were felt throughout most of the Nation. They occurred a few weeks apart on December 16, January 23, and February 7. Hundreds of aftershocks, some severely damaging by themselves, continued for years.[/quote_box_center]
