An enormous sinkhole opened up at 2 am and swallowed a parked Renault Twingo at Piazza San Giorgio in Afragola.
Why the 7×7 meter-wide and 5-meter deep hole collapsed is still a mystery. Water main break or secret tunnel rupture?
Although the real cause of the collapse isn’t known yet, the most credible hypotheses are:
- The rupture of the sewer, perhaps due to the heavy rains of the past days
- The rupture of an old tunnel that connects the crypt of the church of St. George with the Castle as a number of secret passages go under the square.
The old Castle of Afragola is situated close to the hole and many tunnels and underground galleries connect the historic building.
