The deep ocean is unknown. It contains rarely seen animals and fish that, when stranding or caught terrorize locals and often baffle scientists. Within the last week or so, four sightings (two strandings and two catches) were reported and kept the internet abuzz. This article summarizes these amazing experiences.
The body of a lancetfish was found on a beach south of Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, North Carolina on May 12, 2014. Pretty much terrifying, no? Lancetfish are open ocean fish and rarely comes to shore. Very little is known about their biology.
Although this lancetfish may be the most terrifying of all four reports presented here, a weirder type of fish was caught about 40 nautical miles south of Pamban in India… This strange-looking rare fish is believed to be a fully grown specimen of ‘Rhinochimaera,’ an extremely rare deep sea fish.
Here another weird fish caught in Pensacola, Florida which baffles scientitsts. It is so weird that they are still unable to identify it. It look almost prehistoric to me!
Last but not least, this rare, prehistoric and endangered 7-foot-long Atlantic sturgeon of about 100 pounds was found beginning of the month near Elys Ferry Road Fish in Lyme, Connecticut. According to scientists this specimen was an immature female, maybe 15 years old.
Atlantic Sturgeon could live up to 75 years old and grow up to 15 feet long. There are only thousands left along the east coast.
