Strong M6.9 earthquake hits Fiji – no tsunami threat

The Fiji – Tonga region was hit by a strong M6.9 earthquake at 17:28 UTC on February 24, 2017.

There are no people living within a 100 km (62 miles) radius and no imminent tsunami threat. Just another strong shaking!

The quake’s epicenter was situated at a depth 396.1 km (246.1 miles) by USGS, while EMSC was reporting the M6.9 tremor at a depth of 400 km (248.5 miles).

According to USGS, there are no people living within 100 km (62 miles) around. Suva, the most populated city of the region with 77 366 residents, is situated 664.3 km (412.8 miles) from the epicenter.

 

No casulaties and damage have been reported. USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.
