The volcanic activity is increasing worldwide with at least 4 main eruptions – Piton de la Fournaise (Reunion Island), Sarychev (Russia), Nevados de Chillan (Chile) and Azumayama (Japan) – that have started on September 15, 2018.

Already 24 hours of continuous eruption at Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion Island

The fourth eruption of Piton de la Fournaise has started on September 15 at 4:25 local time. The volcano is still erupting right now. The volcanic tremor (indicator of eruptive intensity at the surface) has been stable since 18:00 yesterday (14:00 UT).

Three cracks, from which magma is ejected, are currently visible. Large fountains reach more than 30 meters in height.

Ebeko (Sept. 15th) and Sarychev (Sept 12th) volcanoes erupt in Russia

The moderate explosive activity of Ebeko volcano continues with a new explosion sending an ash plume up to 4.5 km a.s.l., that is extending to the south-east from the volcano. Kvert states ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. – KVERT

Meanwhile, Sarychev volcano exploded on September 12, 2018 ejecting an cloud of ash up to 3-4 km a.s.l. at 19:03 UTC. An ash cloud drifted to the south-east from the volcano. At 21:00 UTC an ash cloud 5.5×6 km in size moved for about 121 km to the south-east from the volcano, before dissipating. Strong ash explosions could occur at any time. – KVERT

The volcano erupted June 11-21, 2009, sending out ash plumes. As the volcano is near some of the main air routes between East Asia and North America, there was some disruption to air traffic

Alert level of Azumayama, Japan has been raised

The alert level of Azumayama was raised to level 2 / do not approach the crater on 15 September at 13h JST. A notice of not entering the localities of Fukushima-shi, Inawashiro-machi was given by the JMA. The last eruption of this volcano took place in 1977.

There is a possibility that a small scall eruption will take place in Ayumayama. People shouldn’t get close to the large crater.

Eruption of Nevados de Chillan in Chile

On September 14, at 14:01 UTC, an explosion was recorded at Nevados de Chillan sending an ash plume 2.5 km in the air.
