The Raikoke volcano sat dormant for almost a century. Then at 4 a.m. on June 22, 2019, it awoke in a long and powerful volcanic eruption.

The eruption consisted of at least nine explosions and lasted into the evening.

The ash plumes containing large amounts of sulfur dioxide rose as high as 42,700 feet. Lightning was detected in the plumes as they drifted east and northeast.

The before after video below shows how a wondrous place, full of endemic flora and fauna, was turned into a lifeless and empty desert of ash within hours.

Raikoke was a tiny inhabited island of not even 2 square miles in the Sea of Okhotsk. Now, it has turned into a post-apocalyptic ghost island.
