Elias Chasiotis spent the last days of 2019 in Qatar to enjoy a solar eclipse.
As the Sun began rising above the horizon, the ‘ring of fire’ eclipse looked like a devil rising from the waters.
Amateur astrophotographer Elias Chasiotis captured these photographs in the coastal city of Al Wakrah, Qatar, on the morning of December 26, 2019, during the Boxing Day annular eclipse of the sun.
When the sun finally began to rise, it looked like two separate pieces, some sort of red horns piercing the sea.
Then it took the form of a crescent, with the so-called ‘Etruscan vase’ inferior mirage effect visible.
Due to its shape, the phenomenon was nicknamed the ‘evil sunrise.’
Although being an amazing sunrise, Chasiotis missed the annular phase of the eclipse, the so-called “ring of fire” due to cloudy weather conditions.

Three of the first four Muslim rulers (caliphs) were murdered. All of them were among Muhammad’s closest companions. The third caliph was killed by allies of the son of the first (who was murdered by the fifth caliph a few years later, then wrapped in the skin of a dead donkey and burned). The fourth caliph (Ali) was stabbed to death after a bitter dispute with the fifth. The fifth caliph went on to poison one of Muhammad’s two favorite grandsons. The other grandson was later beheaded by the sixth caliph.
The infighting and power struggles between Muhammad’s family members, closest companions and their children only intensified with time. Within 50 short years of Muhammad’s death, even the Kaaba, which had stood for centuries under pagan religion, lay in ruins from internal Muslim war…

Estimates of the civilian toll in other Iranian cities are even more horrendous. A nuclear assault on the city of Arak, the site of a heavy water plant central to Iran’s nuclear program, would potentially kill 93% of its 424,000 residents. Three 100-kiloton nuclear weapons hitting the Persian Gulf port of Bandar Abbas would slaughter an estimated 94% of its 468,000 citizens, leaving just 1% of the population uninjured. A multi-weapon strike on Kermanshah, a Kurdish city with a population of 752,000, would result in an almost unfathomable 99.9% casualty rate. Cham Dallas, the director of the Institute for Health Management and Mass Destruction Defense at the University of Georgia and lead author of the study, says that the projections are the most catastrophic he’s seen in more than 30 years analyzing weapons of mass destruction and their potential effects. “The fatality rates are the highest of any nuke simulation I’ve ever done,” he told me by phone from the nuclear disaster zone in Fukushima, Japan, where he was doing research. “It’s the perfect storm for high fatality rates.”

A Russian warship “aggressively approached” a US Navy destroyer while it was operating in the North Arabian Sea Thursday, ignoring warnings from the US vessel and increasing the risk of a collision, the US Navy said Friday.
Video of the incident, which was obtained by CNN, shows the Russian warship rapidly approaching the USS Farragut, coming as close as 180 feet to the US ship before changing course, according to two defense officials.
The incident is the latest example of a close encounter between US and Russian military forces that American officials have described as unsafe or provocative.
