An extraordinary meeting of the Federal Council was held today, 28 February.

In view of the current situation and the spread of the coronavirus, the Federal Council has decided to cancel all large-scale events involving more than 1000 people.

The ban comes into immediate effect and will apply at least until 15 March.

The Basel Carnival, the Bern Carnival as well as the Geneva Motor Show (more than 600,000 attendees!) have already be canceled.

The Federal Council’s top priority is to protect the population

It is responding to the latest developments in the coronavirus epidemic and has categorised the situation in Switzerland as ‘special’ in terms of the Epidemics Act.

This enables the Federal Council, in consultation with the cantons, to order measures that are normally the responsibility of the cantons.

The Federal Council is banning public and private events in Switzerland at which more than 1000 people would gather.

This ban on events comes into immediate effect and will apply at least until 15 March.

The cantons are responsible for enforcing the ban.

In the case of public or private events at which fewer than 1000 people would gather, event organisers must carry out a risk assessment in conjunction with the competent cantonal authorities to decide whether or not the event can be held.

The Federal Council is aware that this measure will have a significant impact on the public life in Switzerland.

However, the move is expected to provide effective protection to people in Switzerland and to public health.

It should prevent or delay the spread of the disease in Switzerland, thus reducing its momentum. More coronavirus pandemic news on Strange Sounds and Steve Quayle. [Admin Swiss]

  1. California Governor Gavin Newsom said Thursday that 33 people in his state have tested positive for coronavirus and that officials are monitoring 8,400 other people for possible exposure. Newsom’s warning came after health officials in Northern California identified the first U.S. case of coronavirus found in a person who had not had known contact with anyone else with coronavirus — raising fears the pathogen is spreading among the general public for the first time in the U.S.

Gov. Gavin Newsom: “We knew this was inevitable as it relates to the nature, the epidemiology, the nature of these viruses, that that incident would occur.”

California’s warning came as a whistleblower complained the Department of Health and Human Services sent more than a dozen workers to receive the first Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, without proper training for infection control or appropriate protective gear. Those workers were then reportedly not tested for the virus.

Across the U.S., officials are reporting a severe shortage of test kits for the virus. New York officials say they’re preparing their own kits, after kits distributed by the Centers for Disease Control failed validation tests.

Meanwhile, new cases of coronavirus continue to spring up worldwide, with Nigeria reporting its first case and one of Iran’s vice presidents testing positive. At the Vatican, Pope Francis canceled a planned mass after he became ill from an unknown ailment, raising jitters in Italy, where 17 people have died of coronavirus.

Fears over the virus have hammered stock markets worldwide, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping nearly 1,200 points Thursday — the single largest point drop in its history.

The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced the first coronavirus-related drug shortage in the United States but declined to name the drug in question.

The regulator said a drugmaker had informed it of the shortage of one of its drugs because manufacturing of one of its main pharmaceutical ingredients was affected by the fast-moving virus outbreak.

The FDA said that there are alternatives that can be used by patients.

‘We are working with the manufacturer as well as other manufacturers to mitigate the shortage. We will do everything possible to mitigate the shortage,’ the regulator said in the statement.

While the FDA would not name the drug in question or the manufacturer, it did say that it had been recently added to the drug shortages list.

In southern California, some Walgreens stores had been completely depleted of cough medicines, cold and flue medications, vaporizers, masks and thermometers.

Shoppers in Hawaii were buying up flatbeds of canned goods, bottled water, toilet paper and paper towels from a local Costo.

ran’s Minister of Health: The spread of coronavirus will increase in upcoming days

Saeed Namaki, Iran’s Minister of Health announced the “peak” of coronavirus spread in the upcoming days and said a “difficult week” is up ahead.

After the coronavirus crisis management meeting on Friday, Namaki told the reporters: “The international and national epidemiological observations of the disease indicate that the peak of the virus is in the upcoming days.”

“We do not believe in the quarantine of cities and don’t consider it a scientific method, but we are trying to control people’s travels, and I ask the people to travel less,” said Namaki.

He also asked for shorter work hours and work from home.

Namaki added: “The Minister of Education with the help of State-TV and other organizations must find a way to provide education for students at home.”

According to the Health Minister, all the universities will be closed until the end of the week, but the personnel and the faculty will be present.

He also stated that all stadiums and sports events are still closed, and football and other sports events are held without audiences.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Health announced on Friday that the death toll of coronavirus in Iran has reached 34. Other reports indicate much higher number. The MP of Rasht city in the parliament also announced on Friday that the officials are hiding the real number of victims of coronavirus.

According to Iran International’s reliable sources, the confirmed death toll of coronavirus is 192.
Coronavirus in 23 provinces; Iran’s death toll reaches 116

According to the most recent confirmed reports by Iran International sources, the death toll of coronavirus in Iran has reached 116.

Kianoush Jahanpour, the spokesman for the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that 106 more cases of coronavirus have been identified and seven of them have died. Based on this report, the official death toll of coronavirus in Iran is at 26, with 245 identified cases.

23 provinces of Iran have confirmed cases of coronavirus now, which is up from 16 until yesterday and six from two days ago.

The two main hospitals in Qom city, the center of the epidemic, which were designated for coronavirus patients with 600 beds combined are now at full capacity and there are videos on social media that show hospitals turning away patients.

Therefore, another hospital was designated for coronavirus patients in Qom with 100 beds.

The Health Ministry official sent to Qom city announced on Monday that 300 patients have been hospitalized in these hospitals, but with both hospitals being filled on Tuesday night, that means a 100 percent increase in the number of patients in 24 hours.

However, President Hassan Rouhani stated on Tuesday that the report on coronavirus provided by the Ministry of Health has been “hopeful” and shows “a move toward controlling the virus”. He added that From Saturday the country will resume all normal functions.

The medical teams of several hospitals have also been infected with coronavirus with several casualties.

It was reported that five members of the medical staff in Tajrish hospital in Tehran and their spouses have been infected with coronavirus and one is in critical condition.

Nurse Narjes Khanalizadeh in Lahijan hospital in Gilan province lost her life to coronavirus on Tuesday.

Gilan province has reported 70 cases of coronavirus but officials say that is due to the fact that all test kits must be sent to Tehran for the result and so the real number is probably much higher.
