You probably read about islands forming after a large earthquake in Pakistan, an underwater volcanic eruption or a long and on-going earthquake swarm… But did you know that severe tropical cyclones can also create new islands and even lakes?
As severe Tropical Cyclone Seroja brought historic flooding and landslides to portions of southern Indonesia and East Timor before hitting Western Australia’s Mid West region, the storm indeed created a new lake in Kupang City and a new island on Rote Island…
Storm Seroja creates new Island in Indonesia
A new island appeared in Rote Ndao Regency after the Tropical cyclone Seroja hit the area last week.
According to official sources, the new island appeared on Rote Island and geological investigations are underway.
It is still unknown how the island formed, but many suggest that high waves, strong current and the many tornadoes that swept the area have played a major role.
Geologists also have to determine whether the island appeared because of the formation of a gravel bank or if a piece of land was carried away from the mainland by tidal waves.
The new island, that appeared in Loaholu District, Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, on Sunday, April 5, 2021, will be dubbed Easter Island.
New lake forms after Storm Seroja in Indonesia
A two-hectare lake appeared in Sikumana Village, Maulafa District, Kupang City, Indonesia after deadly tropical cyclone Seroja.
The new lake started growing in a rural region on Monday, April 5, 2021, submerging and destroying crops such as corn, beans, and coconuts.
For all residents, this is an unprecedented event. Locals fear a new disaster because of the always increasing water level.
The new lake is fed by the numerous new water springs created during the tropical cyclone… And since they don’t dry up, the lake is continuously growing…
New springs have even cracked homes and forced evacuations.
