In October, a large amount of pumice stones – a very light and porous volcanic rock formed when a gas-rich froth of glassy lava solidifies rapidly – have been found along the coast of Kitadaito Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The Meteorological Agency is now investigating its origin.

First results show, they could have been released during the eruption of an underwater volcano back in August 2021.

The pumice was found covering beaches and stones over more than a dozen kilometers from the northern to the eastern coasts of Kitadaito Island.

In the video, you can see that countless brown “pumice stones” are floating on the surface of the waves.

The size of the stones ranges between a few millimeters to the size of an adult fist.

Specialists from the Japan Meteorological Agency say the pumice stones originated from the Augusts’s eruption of underwater volcano Fukutoku-Okanoba in the Ogasawara Islands.

However, the volcanologic institute has taken samples in order to exactly determine the origin of these mysterious pumice stones found along the coast of Kitadaito Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
