Mystery: The lake around the temple of water god, a Chinese cultural heritage area in the Shanxi Province of North China, has completely disappeared overnight for no apparent reason.
The information was first released by a Chinese governmental website on August 2, 2014. Since then, the Shanxi government has appealed to experts to investigate the water mystery and especially refill the lake… Without success!
Located in County Guangling in the northeast of Shanxi, the Temple of the God of water or Shuishen Miao dates from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Established in the middle of a lake covering about 24,000 square meters, this picturesque site is protected by the state since 2006.
According to local residents, the lake has disappeared overnight. And according to the management director of the site, it had never dried up before.
However, documents published by the local government reports that the water level began to drop to 10 July, in the midst of drought.
Today the lake is nothing more than a puddle of cracked mud full of dead fish. Both tourists and local are frustrated about this event.
It is so sad! The temple is a picturesque place. It is part of the region’s heritage. People grew up around the temple and it must be pretty difficult for them to accept that the water has disappeared totally!
But besides being a cultural site, the lake is also used to irrigate surrounding fields (reservoirs hold 8.58 million cubic meters used for irrigation of about 700 acres of fields). So this could turn out to be a huge environmental and health problem!
As in California, the water is scarce in the region. In comparison to last year, there was 40% less water. Some speculate this sudden water disparition could be linked to local farmers illegally draining water from the lake to feed their fields.
So can you help debunk the mystery of this 24’000 m2 lake around the Temple of Water God that has disappeared overnight?
