A mammoth 163kg (360lb) squid has been captured accidentally by fishermen off the northern coast of Japan.
The male sea creature was killed in the struggle after being hauled onto the boat in a fishing net the workers were hoping would retrieve yellowtail fish.
Experts say the squid was around 8m (13ft) long with its tentacles, which were damaged after it was caught. Is this another hoax? I guess not!
It’s hard to study these elusive creatures in their deep-sea habitat. In 2012, researchers from Japan’s National Science Museum and the Japanese public broadcaster NHK and the Discovery Channel were the first to film a giant squid in its natural habitat.
