Huge Sinkhole Swallows Church on Holy Croagh Patrick, Ireland

Croagh Patrick or the Reek, is a pilgrimage site in County Mayo in Ireland. On the top of this 764 metres (2,507 ft) sits a small church called “Teampall Phadraig”. Or should we better say was?

According to The Mayo News, this chapel has just been swallowed by a huge sinkhole and is almost completely destroyed. The swallowed chapel has been discovered by a regular pilgrim at around 7:30 am on Monday, March 31, 2014.

Mayo Mountain Rescue team is baffled and announced:

While we were very aware of the increased instances of sinkholes around the country because of the recent flooding and storms it is unprecedented for one to appear on the peak of a mountain.
