It’s so cold in Chicago that the sky is falling. Well, just sort of!
John Conners was stupefied as he came back from work and found a giant chunk of ice that had fallen from the sky and made a huge hole in his roof before landing in his living room. OMG!
As this mysterious ice boulder crashed – just before noon on Tuesday January 6, 2015 -it triggered a loud boom, a horrible blast as if a house blew up down the street.
What’s the weirdest is the fact that Conners’ home was the only building in the area that was damaged! Are we getting now booming ice meteor showers?
As explained by Conners:
[quote_box_center]When I walked into my apartment the chair that is normally against the wall was pushed into the middle of the living room. There was ice everywhere. I could see the sky through the hole in my ceiling. [/quote_box_center]
So what is this huge piece of ice?
The ice that fell into his living room was much larger when it made impact. He was indeed about six hours out for work, meaning about six hours of melting.
Conners’ home is near O’Hare International Airport, so it’s possible the ice came from an airplane.
This mystery chunk of ice may also have been a megacryometeor – a large chunk of ice that forms in the atmosphere, not unlike a large hail storm.
But the strange phenomenon of ice chunks dropping from the sky for no apparent reason appears to be happening throughout the world. Two years ago a huge chunk of ice was found in a farmer’s field in the Hrira region of Morocco. First believed to be of extraterrestrial origin, this piece of comet turned out to be a megacryometeor:
If you like icy stories, you will enjoy these ice boulders appearing in Lake Michigan!
The extraterrestrial theory is not so easily dismissed. Speculation about megacryometeors suggest they are the result of global warming/climate change, yet this would have little to do with ice falls of the 1800s. Furthermore, some ice falls are breaking the sound barrier. A megacryometeor falling from the upper atmosphere could never reach speeds to do that at terminal veolcity, unless it came from space.
