But cows are getting crazy in numerous farms in the Netherlands.
Dairy farmers in Stitswerd have recently found themselves struggling with a mystery: their cows are regularly suddenly taken by panic, running around – all in the same direction – in terror in the cowshed, and are almost impossible to calm.
Agony
The phenomenon occurs since last autumn. “Suddenly you see them simultaneously jump up, and start running. This causes the cowshed’s walls to nearly collapse. The cows sweat of agitation. It really is agony,” says dairy farmer John Oudman.
The neighbors
The strange thing is that it occurs not only at Oudman’s farm, but also at five other farms in the area. The panic attacks occur at exactly the same time at each farm and nearly break down the whole place.
Veterinary
Farmers and vets in Stitswerd have no idea what is causing the panic attacks that occur three to four times a month. It is not unusual that cows are restless, but at this scale and at the same time at diferent places, that’s very strange. A Veterinarian believes this strange behavior is due to underground vibrations and adds: “Animals feel much more than people. It is also known that animals are often away for a tsunami coming ashore.“
Head in the air
Farmers however believe the culprit is in the air as they always put their heads in the air and explain: “I do not think it is because of earthquakes, because they are used to those.”
It has also been reported that nearby horses start running too.
So what is the source of this strange animal behavior? Some kind of power source? The food they are given? A new kind of disease? In the Netherlands again baboons were so apathic and just sitting around that it baffled zoo officials?
