Nine North Koreans died and around 30 more were injured on August 3 evening, when a gas leak exploded in North Korea.

A source in the area told Daily NK today that gasoline stored in a house in the city’s Tapsong District somehow ignited at around 6:10 PM. This led to the explosion of a liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder which triggered the explosion of 10 other LPG cylinders attached to nearby houses.

One section of row houses has been completely destroyed by the explosion,” the source said, adding, “There’s absolutely nothing left.

Six people immediately died in the explosions, while another 30 people suffered from varying degrees of burns. Another three people reportedly died at the hospital.

Houses in the vicinity of the first explosion also caught on fire. The fires that lasted about two hours were put out by local residents as no fire trucks were sent on-site.

Authorities have also made clear there will be no “compensation” because the incident was due to “carelessness.”

The authorities inquired whether there were any households that have safely rescued portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il – presumably as part of efforts to use the incident as an opportunity to promote loyalty toward the regime, the source said.

The municipal Ministry of Social Security office has reportedly arrested the occupant of the house where the fire began and is currently investigating what happened.

Meanwhile rice, blankets, clothes and other necessities have been supplied to those affected by the incident. The costs for these necessities, however, will reportedly be levied on local citizens.

This gas explosion happened just one day after the deadly and apocalyptic chemical blast in Beirut, Lebanon, that has killed more than 100 people and injured 4,000 other residents.
