These giant gas bubbles are produced in lakes and ponds by bacteria feeding on decaying organic matter. The released methane then floats to the surface in bubbles and become trapped when the water freezes in winter.

Meanwhile huge methane vents and craters have been discovered around the world from Russia to Western US and East US. So imagine if such a methane chimney would burst into flame! That would be very dangerous and insane!
