While we report unprecedent drought in parts of the USA, flash flooding in Solomon Islands leaves at least 16 dead and thousands homeless in the capital Honiara.
According to BBC, rescue efforts are hampered by heavy rain and huge waves battering the coastline. An unconfirmed number of people are still missing. The floods have caused unprecedented damage (loss of houses along Mataniko River, landslides and flooding on the western and eastern plains of Guadalcanal). Australia and New Zealand provide up to 350’000$ for emergency relief supplies and shelter for the thousands of people made homeless after heavy rain and flooding.
These flash floods are one of the worst disasters ever to hit Solomon Islands.
Hopefully will the storm not develop into a cyclone!
