An enormous sinkhole has opened up on a parking lot in Meridian, Mississippi on November 7, 2015.
Meanwhile the 15-meter-wide and 180-meter-long cavity has swallowed 15 vehicules… But it is still growing.
The sinkhole appeared in the parking lot of the new IHOP restaurant in the city of Meridian.
The earth collapse treiggered several booms and cut down the electricity.
Frightened customers ran outside to see their cars swallowed by this 15-meter-wide, nearly 180-meter-long hole.
Meridian Fire Department crew is now trying to stabilize the ditch.
The is no clear origin for this apocalyptical sinkhole, but heavy rains hit the region last week.
Here a map of sinkhole in the USA and Mississippi isn’t too bad actually.
Water main broken, underground explosion… So, what did just happen as the earth collapsed in front of the IHOP restaurant in Meridian, Mississippi?

I just figured I would provide an update. I live near there, and pass the location often. It is not a naturally occurring sinkhole in the traditional sense, but is related to human activity. In actuality, it is a very large culvert (18’x27′) which collapsed. If you are interested in seeing it on Google Earth, search for “Red Lobster in Meridian, MS .” (The IHOP was not yet built when the images were taken.) Between Red Lobster and Ryan’s, the undamaged end the culvert is plainly visible. It runs east under I-20 and ends to the NE of the U-Haul rental business where it becomes an open ditch which drains into the Sowashee Creek. The flat area of asphalt seen in the picture is where the IHOP is later built. The restaurant had only been open for one week when this occurred. I will not be surprised to hear that the construction equipment used to build the restaurant is what caused the initial crack in the culvert, which finally gave way when the heavy rains were added to the equation. This is just my own personal speculation at this point, however.
Thanks for this update.
[…] this weekend was discussed in comments here. Strange Sounds has a story for more info. See “Enormous sinkhole swallows 15 cars in Meridian, Mississippi” Also see “Fault Lines in the US: This Map Shows the Major Earthquake Hazard Areas […]
It will be interesting to see a daylight drone video or image of this sinkhole, to get a proper visual of the nature of this thing.
True! You know somebody in the area?
