Yes hail snow was falling in Saudi Arabia on January 15, 2016!
And it fell so heavily that it coated the road to Mecca hindering traffic.
This is confirmed by an Al Jazeera’s news story in which they use both snow and hail.
This must have been in all cases a real shock for the drivers.
The apocalyptical hailstorm swept through the region between Mecca and Medina covering various parts of the region in white.
In any cases, snow or hail in Saudi Arabia is just weird. And sometimes extreme storms create rivers of hail in the desert.
