A strong explosion of the Santa Maria volcano occurred on June 17, 2016 at 9:15am, sending a column of ash and gas at 5,000 meters (16.404 ft) above the crater.
The today eruption was accompanied by a strong rumble noise, a shock wave and pyroclastic flows on the east and west flanks of the volcano. Here some impressive pictures.
On June 14, 2016, lahars were reported at the Santiaguito (Santa Maria) volcano.
