Mysterious pneumonia ravages Asia
A deadly ‘unknown pneumonia’ that has a higher death rate than Covid-19 is understood to have broken out in Kazakhstan.
The Chinese embassy, which quoted local media reports, said Atyrau and Aktobe counties as well as Skymkent city had seen a spike in cases of the illness since mid-June.
Kazakhstan’s Health Ministry said it had recorded more than 32,000 cases of pneumonia and 451 deaths from the illness between June 29 and July 5 alone.
The embassy said the central Asian nation had 1,772 deaths in the first half of the year, including 628 last month – some of whom were Chinese nationals.

Bubonic plague in China
Meanwhile, last Sunday, the city of Bayannur located in the northwest of Beijing was on high alert after a case of Bubonic plague was reported on Saturday.
According to state-run Xinhua news agency, By Sunday, authorities in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous region had issued a level 3 warning citywide for the prevention and control of the plague.
The local health authority also announced that the warning will continue until the end of 2020 as there will be a risk of spreading. “At present, there is a risk of a human plague epidemic spreading in this city. Public should improve its self-protection awareness and ability, and report abnormal health conditions promptly,” according to China Daily, a state-run newspaper.
On 1 July, Xinhua news agency reported that two suspected cases of the Bubonic plague were recorded in Khovd province in Western Mongolia and were confirmed by labs.
So far, a total of 146 people who had been in contact with them have been isolated and are being treated at local hospitals. – Policy Times
Dengue Fever in Florida Keys
An 11th case of the mosquito-borne dengue fever has been confirmed in the Florida Keys, health officials said. So far, all 11 cases have been in Key Largo, including 8 cases the last week of June, the Florida Department of Health officials said Tuesday.
Officials are currently conducting epidemiological studies to determine the origin and extent of these infections.
One case of dengue fever has been confirmed Miami-Dade County.
The disease is transmitted through the bite of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito, an invasive species that also spreads diseases like yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya. – Fox5ny
New mutation of Corona
A mutation in the protein that allows SARS-CoV-2 to enter cells might make it easier for the virus to spread.
The mutation is not new. It appears in low levels in samples taken from COVID-19 patients as far back as February.
But this variation of the virus (nicknamed the “G” variation) seems to show up in more and more of the virus samples taken from people infected recently compared to early in the pandemic.

New virus kills hundreds of elephants in Botswana
Finally, a new pathogen may be responsible for the death of hundreds of elephants in Botswana.
So far 281 carcasses have been found, according to the government. A non-profit organization has said it found as many as 356 carcasses.
Initial test results in Botswana elminated known diseases that would cause mass deaths and this may signal “novel diseases,” the government said in a statement. – Bloomberg Quint
