The smoke ring was captured by baffled residents of Santa Clara, California during the heavy thunderstorms that engulfed the area on August 16, 2020.
This phenomenon is poorly understood and most often occurs over volcanoes even in clear weather.

My opinion: There was a heavy thunderstorm going on with lots of lightning. When the bolt struck, a small fire occurred, and the smoke took the form of a vortex – a smoke ring – due to the prevailing conditions in the lower atmosphere.
