On Saturday, July 17, a huge sandstorm engulfed the capital of Saudi Arabia – Riyadh and turned the sky BLOOD RED… Just after extreme rains flooded the region…

The dust clouds were accompanied by heavy winds, making it very difficult to see and breathe and causing significant traffic chaos.
Sandstorms are not uncommon in the region, but the intensity and low visibility of this weather phenomenon prompted the Saudi Civil Defence to urge people to stay inside, particularly if they suffered from respiratory illnesses.
Riyadh’s traffic police urged residents to drive slowly with headlights to reduce the risk of accidents.
The “freak Biblical sandstorm” may have been prophesied in the Book of Exodus from the Hebrew Bible.
“And Hashem went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; that they might go by day and by night; the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, departed not from before the people,” reads Exodus 13:21.
The apocalyptic sandstorm occurred after heavy rains that turned parts of the desert into lakes…

The National Center of Meteorology expects more thunderstorms with heavy winds and hail in the regions of Najran, Riyadh, the Empty Quarter and the southern parts of the Eastern Province in the next few days. So watch out if you are living in these zones! [Alwatan, Eremnews]

We get haboobs and flash floods here in the desert. I always look at it as good for the water table, and go outside.
Yesterday, (monsoon season)I went outside to stand in the path of a dust devil, of medium size. Got right in its path, closed my eyes, and held my hat on. It was fun. I do stuff like that, or try and photograph lightning outside.
We don’t have anything else entertaining. No tv or movies. Crappy radio is as good as it gets. May as well enjoy the great outdoors?
Flash flood warnings for 72 hours. 2.5″ rain so far. Plenty to be grateful for when it rains. All the animals are out and grazing. Every year we get monsoons. Nothing out of the ordinary. Plenty of big lightning too. Like watching artillery go off in the distance. Love it!
