Airline Pilot Captures Beautiful Timelapse Footage of Milky Way

For passengers, it’s not easy to shoot footage from your plane’s tiny window. But for a pilot, it’s something else.

And sometimes, when the sky is clear, a plane pilot may capture some amazing aerial footage of the Milky Way like in the video below.

This below timelapse footage provides an incredible view of the Milky Way, visible overhead while the Earth races past beneath. It was captured by pilot Sales Wick during a longhaul flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Sao Paulo, Brazil. From his vantage point above the clouds and the worst light pollution of large cities, Wick captured clear, long-exposure images of the star-filled sky.

Sky production explains: Flying through the night, while the world beneath us is at sleep, is a pretty common thing as a longhaul pilot. Late evening departures lead to far distant destinations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Sao Paolo or J’burg. Depending on the direction of the flight the crew and the passengers either have a short night up ahead if flying eastbound or almost eternal darkness if headed westwards.
