I would have never imagined something like that in Indonesia!
Discover the Citarum River, one of the most polluted river in the world! And you can’t even see the water below the trash!
Citarum is the longest and largest river in West Java, Indonesia. About 5 million people live along the river. But they are only reposible for a small amout of this pollution!
The citarum river is used to support agriculture, water supply, fishery, industry, sewerage, electricity and more… According to some witnesses, the color of water may change color depending of what dye they are using in textile fabrics.
More than 2,000 industries contaminate 5,020 sq miles of the river with lead, mercury, arsenic and other toxins. But textile factories in Bandung and Cimahi are the major toxic waste contributors.
But people rely on this river to cook, eat and actually live! How is this mess possible?
On December 5, 2008, the Asian Development Bank approved a $500 million loan for cleaning up the river, calling it the world’s dirtiest. Now the Citarum is getting better. The pollution has decreased but the Citarum River still remains in the top ten world’s dirtiest rivers in the world.
Pretty hard to imagine swimming your children in this trash, no? Try to imagine everything bad (bacteria, viruses and sea creatures among others) you may find in there!
Don’t you feel pretty happy to have clean drinking water?
It ‘sounds’ like we’re slowly digesting our own world.
Without taking proper care of the ‘by-products’.

[…] Yes this floating mess is now indeed visible off the California coast and according to scientists already impacting on the ecosystem negatively. Almost as bad as this river? […]
