For the past couple of days, Spain has been experiencing a strange weather phenomenon known as ‘Calima’.
This is when a sand and dust-laden wind blowing from the Sahara desert in North Africa reaches Spain and starts covering the landscape… Even the snow becomes reddish!
This is neither smog nor pollution, no it’s just sand from the Sahara that is covering the snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Spain.
Also known as ‘Calima’ in Spain, this weird weather phenomenon generally raises temperatures but lowers visibility due to the fine yellowish-brown air-borne dust.
As you may understand, a strong Calima may cause respiratory problems in humans.
This weather phenomenon normally occurs around this time of year and lasts a few days leaving lots of cleaning up to do.
Imagine that! Skiing on red snow! Crazy weather phenomenon!
