A Russian mining company spilled 20,000 tons of oil in the Arctic Circle, turning a river red.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a state of emergency and enraged after officials only learned about the spill two days after it happened.
Twenty thousand tonnes of diesel fuel spilled into the Ambarnaya River inside the Arctic Circle forcing Vladimir Putin to order a state of emergency.
The spill occurred when a fuel reservoir at a power plant near the city of Norilsk collapsed on Friday.
The plant is operated by a division of Nornickel, whose factories in the area have made the city one of the most heavily polluted places on Earth.
“Why did government agencies only find out about this two days after the fact?” Putin asked. “Are we going to learn about emergency situations from social media?“
And this how this dramatic oil spill looked like from space:
This is not the first time rivers turned red in the Norilsk region:
Russia has launched a criminal probe. The company said a huge cleanup was underway. But I expect this clean up to take long and be fastidious… And I don’t want to think about all the animals that will die! More prophetic news on Strange Sounds and Steve Quayle. [NBC News]
Next war will be on water not oil. Oil is now -40 dollars.
