Poland’s second longest river, the Oder, has just died from toxic pollution. Fish will be eaten by birds, mammals and maybe humans along the river… People living along the river use it for almost everything (drinking, daily care, washing, watering their crops, grazing their animals… This could be huge!

In addition to solvents, German authorities have detected mercury levels beyond the scale of measurements.

More than 10 tons of fish haver already been collected along the river, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg…

The Polish government is aware of this water poisoning since two weeks as huge numbers of dead fish were first spotted near the southwestern Polish town of Olawa in late July, along with dead animals such as beavers… But these mad officials remained silent and didn’t alarm anybody…

Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak announced Thursday that soldiers and reservists were being deployed to help remove pollutants from the river, which is known as the Oder in German and the Odra in Polish and Czech. It flows north for hundreds of miles from the Oder Mountains of Czechia and empties into the Baltic Sea.

Only today, in the midst of a media storm, the marshal of the Lubuskie region has filed a motion to declare a state of natural disaster along the country’s second longest river.. “Under no circumstances are people allowed to go near the Oder River…” she said.

From Sky News and AP News:

At least 10 tonnes of dead fish have been pulled out of the River Oder which flows along part of Poland’s border with Germany – as officials warn people not to enter the water due to possible contamination.

Anglers and volunteers removed the dead fish from the 200km (124 mile) stretch of the river north of Olawa in southwest Poland, the head of the agency which manages the country’s national waters has said.

Przemyslaw Daca, head of State Water Holding, also called the situation a gigantic ecological catastrophe.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki vowed that Polish authorities would hold the perpetrators to account.

Huge amounts of chemical waste were probably dumped in the Oder River with full awareness of the risks and consequences,” he said in a video on Facebook. “We will not let this matter go. We will not rest until the guilty are severely punished.

Ewa Drewniak, a biologist working with opposition political group Civic Coalition, has accused the government of not responding quickly enough.

Dead fish have been flowing in the Oder for the past two weeks and people have not been informed about it, I’ve seen scores of people bathing in the river a week and a half ago, they were not aware of the danger, this is scandalous,” she said.

The reports from the Oder are simply terrible,” Michael Kellner, a senior politician of Germany’s The Greens party, said on Twitter.

Mercury & huge amounts of chemical waste

Poland’s prime minister said Friday that “huge amounts of chemical waste” were probably dumped intentionally into the Oder River, which runs along the border with Germany, causing environmental damage so severe it will take the river years to recover.

German media have reported that the poison is mercury, although this has not been officially confirmed. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the mass fish die-off.

Przemyslaw Daca, head of Polish Waters, the national water management authority, said Thursday that 10 tons of dead fish have been removed from the river.

This shows that we are dealing with a gigantic and outrageous ecological catastrophe,” he said at a news conference near the river where officials faced angry residents.

Meanwhile, German officials complained that Poland failed to honor an international treaty by not notifying them immediately about the possible contamination of the river. A boat captain first alerted German authorities about the dead fish on Aug. 9.

We know that the chain of reporting that’s envisaged for such cases didn’t work,” Christopher Stolzenberg, a spokesperson for Germany’s Federal Environment Ministry, told reporters in Berlin.

Will take years for the river ecosystem to recover

An association of fishermen in Zielona Gora, a city in western Poland, said Friday it was suspending fishing in the river due to the contamination.

According to Morawiecki, the scale of the pollution is so large that it may take years for the river ecosystem to recover.

Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak announced Thursday that soldiers and reservists were being deployed to help remove pollutants from the river, which is known as the Oder in German and the Odra in Polish and Czech. Dying Lake Urmia: One of Many Clerics Created Environmental Disaster
Lake Urmia, in the mountains of northwest Iran, began shrinking in 1995 due to a combination of prolonged drought, and the extraction of water for farming and dams, according to the UN Environment Program. Lake Urmia is an important ecosystem, a key stopping point for migratory birds, and home to an endemic shrimp as well as other underwater species.

The Urmia Lake Basin is a generally mountainous territory containing two of the famous Iranian volcanic peaks (Sahand, 3707 meters, and Sabalan, 4810 meters), and with several vast productive plains in the valleys and around the Lake. Most parts of the Basin are located at altitudes above 1280 meters and up to 4886 meters above mean sea level. The elevation of the Lake’s water surface is varying between above 1270 and below 1280 meters.

The catchment area of Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran includes a number of wetlands that are important and significant in terms of environmental, social, and economic values. The complex of these wetlands includes the large and extremely salty lake of Urmia and about 30 salty-sweet water surrounding wetlands, seven of which are of special importance. Some of these wetlands are part of the Ramsar Convention and are of international importance, while others are registered as national protected areas.
